Symptoms

Below are some of the symptoms of depression (unipolar) or the mania associated with manic depression (bipolar) disorder.

Symptoms of Depression

  • Prolonged sadness or unexplained crying spells
  • Irritability, anger, worry, agitation, and anxiety
  • Pessimism, indifference
  • Loss of energy, persistent lethargy
  • Low self-esteem or guilt and feelings of worthlessness
  • Significant changes in appetite or sleeping patterns
  • Inability to concentrate or indecisiveness
  • Inability to enjoy former interests, social withdrawl
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

 

 

Symptoms of Mania

  • Heightened mood, exaggerated optimism and self-confidence
  • Grandiose delusions, inflated sense of self-importance
  • Excessive irritability, aggressive behavior
  • Decreased need for sleep without fatigue
  • Poor judgement, easily distracted
  • Racing speech, flight of ideas, impulsiveness
  • Reckless behavior such as spending sprees, rash business decisions, erratic driving, sexual indiscretions
  • In the most severe cases, auditory hallucinations
